Example Business Analyst Interview Questions

Even if you are an experienced interviewee, this information will be a valuable refresher.

This is well worth an investment of 10 minutes to increase your chances of securing a job.

Practice and prepare

Practice your responses to typical job interview questions.  Think of concrete examples you can use to highlight your technical skills.  Providing evidence of your achievements is a great way to promote your suitability.

Examples of questions that could be asked for Business Analyst positions could include:

  • What is the typical role of a Business Analyst, what does they do and what are their responsibilities?
  • What are the various common tools which would be used by a Business Analyst?
  • When working on a project, what would be your typical approach? When exactly would you be done with requirements?
  • What are some documents which could be needed by a Business Analyst?
  • If the requirements are changing rapidly, how do you organise yourself, and also be competitive with other Business Analysts?
  • What analysis and modelling techniques and methodologies have you found to be the most effective, and why?
  • What are some of the most important points you must take note of when preparing a business plan?
  • What diagrams and/or other materials do you use to capture and describe customer needs and convey technical information?
  • How many business case engagements have you worked on? What was your involvement?
  • Tell me about a time when you created long-range plans at a previous employer.
  • Explain the steps you must take to create use cases when working with specific document requirements.
  • Tell me about a time when you’ve had to work with difficult stakeholders, and how you handled it.
  • Define basic flow, exception flow and alternate flow in use cases, what’s the difference between them?
  • Why do you think flowcharts are important?
  • What is your requirement elicitation strategy?
  • Define application usability.
  • What steps are necessary to turn an idea into a product?
  • What does BPMN stand for? What is BPMN Gateway?
  • Explain CAP Analysis.
  • What does INVEST stand for and what does it do?
  • Tell me what you know about scope creep.
  • Describe the difference between a business requirement document (BRD) and functional requirement document (FRD).
  • Explain the difference between an analysis model and a design model.
