4 tips to make your resume standout

1. Tailor your resume to the job, include keywords relevant to the position:

To grab a recruiter’s attention, provide them with 8-10 powerful bullet points highlighting your strength for the role. This will increase your chance of getting noticed.

Before responding to a job posting, review the job description and take the time to tailor your resume accordingly.

2. Consistent font size:

Always use an easy to read font, for example, Arial, Calibri and Lucida Sans. You should use a point size of 11 or 12. Anything smaller is not recommended as it can be quite difficult to read, especially when scanning.

3. Maximum 6 pages:

Your resume is a career selling tool, not an autobiography. Keep your resume short and focused on your key skills. Ensure you include the most important information relevant to the position you are applying for in your resume. 4. Professional Experience

The employment history should be covered thoroughly in descending order (latest job first). The role and responsibilities should be explained in short, powerful bullets that are easy to scan.

5. Education and Qualifications

Start with your highest qualification first. Example:

  • Tertiary education
  • Certifications
  • Additional Courses/Training

6. Explaining Gaps in Employment

You may have periods when you were not working/currently not working. This can be due to unemployment, maternity leave and other reasons. It is helpful for recruiters to see why you have not worked for a period of time.

Employers will always want to know and it is better to address upfront. This will improve your chances by answering the employers’ questions before they ask it.

7. Your Professional Social Media Links

Include your LinkedIn or any blogs etc.
